CQA Chairman's Year in Review - 2023

As another World Quality Week 2023 is upon us, I'm taking some time to look at what Construction Quality Australia (the CQA) has achieved over the past twelve months. It seems like only yesterday that we were coming out of COVID and formed as a not-for-profit.

As an industry, we are seeing a shift in the market - as companies struggle with tight margins, and customers push for greater certainty and consistency. There is a huge need for affordable housing for our workers, but nobody seems to agree how best to deliver it. The shift to renewables and new energy sources means more remote work, and more risk if Constructors don't get quality right first time.

Achievements in 2023

Here's a taste of what we have been up to since last year's World Quality Week:

  • We have released our first Quarterly Newsletter (click here to subscribe to the next one - it's FREE)

  • A number of construction companies have submitted EOIs to become Founder Members of the CQA

  • We are educating the industry - we have published a Guide to Writing an ITP to help up-skill Contractors and Subcontractors.

  • We are standardising the industry - we have agreed Construction Industry Standard Cause Codes for NCRs

  • We are bringing the industry together - we have hosted three Quarterly Workshops with the top Quality people in Tier One and Two Contractors.

  • We have agreed mutual membership with the National Precast Concrete Association of Australia (NPCAA)

  • We have over 1750 followers on our LinkedIn page - with more than 71,000 impressions (please join us)

  • We are active on the Water-shedding Committee driving enhancements to the NCC/BCA

Plans for 2024

And what do we have planned before World Quality Week 2024? Well:

  • We are launching individual memberships (click here to if you want to be first on the list for more information)

  • We will be working with the NPCAA to standardise Precast Record formats

  • We will be working with the Australian Steel Institute to standardise Structural Steel Records in line with AS5131

  • We are hosting Roads Authority Quality Forums - so we are all on the same page

  • We will be developing a standard list of concrete NCR descriptions for the industry to use

  • We will be issuing an industry standard ITP template

  • and more...

Thanks for the support of our board - David Tatler, Patrick Carnuccio and Peter Billimoria - plus our committee and working group members - without all your insights, hard work and volunteering your time, none of this would be possible.

Regards

Jerome Harris
