Two people have been rescued after a wooden bridge in Norway collapsed and sent a car plunging into the water, while a truck was left stranded on a raised section.

Police were alerted early on Monday that the 150-metre-long bridge near the village of Tretten in southern Norway had fallen into the river.

The truck driver was rescued by helicopter, while the car driver managed to escape by himself. Both drivers are doing well, police said.

"It is completely catastrophic, completely unreal," local mayor Jon Halvor Midtmageli told Norway's Dabgladet newspaper.

There are calls for a new investigation into the safety of Norwegian bridges.
